Mamuka Bakhtadze, Prime Minister of Georgia met with Donald Tusk, President of the European Council within his working visit to Brussels today.
Parties discussed the positive trend in the wide array of aspects and current relations between the Council of Europe and Georgia, along with the prospects of future cooperation.
Mamuka Bakhtadze clearly stated at the meeting with Donald Tusk that Government of Georgia continues the implementation of the comprehensive reforms towards a greater approximation with the European Union. Head of the Government of Georgia briefed the President of the European Council in detail about the new Government priorities and initiatives, which have been noted positively by Donald Tusk, who focused on the economy.
It was stated that Georgia achieved a significant progress towards the European integration. It was mentioned that success of the country is exemplary in the areas of visa-free travel within the Schengen area, accession to the European Energy Community, strategic dialogue on security with the European Union, implementation of the Association Agreement (AA) and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA). All the above-mentioned has facilitated a further intensification of strategic partnership between the EU and Georgia.
Within the context, discussions were related to a new format of cooperation between the Government of Georgia and European Council. It was noted that high level format will facilitate a greater political association of Georgia and economic integration with EU.
Parties reviewed the development of the Easter Partnership format and leadership role of Georgia among the countries of Eastern Partnership in terms of democratic reform implementation.
Also, meeting was focused on the challenging condition of security, humanitarian and human rights in the occupied regions of Georgia. Positive assessment was given to the efforts of the Government of Georgia for the peaceful resolution of the conflict. Attention was paid to the developed peace-building initiatives.
Head of the Government of Georgia noted the most significant role of the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in ensuring the peace and welfare in Georgia, along with the engagement of a Special Envoy of EU in the format of International Discussions of Geneva.
Meeting held at the European Council was attended by David Zalkaliani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and Natalia Sabanadze, Ambassador of Georgia to the Kingdom of Belgium and Grand Duchy of Luxemburg and European Union, Head of the Permanent Representation of Georgia to the EU.
