The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has launched an investigation into the alleged illegal appropriation and embezzlement of property belonging to the Georgian Technical University, following a complaint submitted by the university’s rector, Davit Gurgenidze.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the Rector of the Technical University applied to the Prosecutor’s Office on October 17 of this year, noting facts of the illegal privatization of real estate - including land plots, buildings and the sports fields attached to them - located at 77 Kostava Street in Tbilisi and owned and used by the Georgian Technical University, which were transferred to LLC University of Georgia.

The investigation, under Article 182, Part 2, Subparagraph ‘d’ and Part 3, Subparagraph ‘b’ of the Criminal Code of Georgia, was launched by the Department for Combating Corruption of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia on October 24. We will periodically update the public on the progress of the investigation and provide relevant legal assessments,” the Prosecutor’s Office said.

On October 17, Rector Davit Gurgenidze appealed to the Prosecutor’s Office to seize the property, which, according to him, had been taken by the family of Georgia’s former President Mikheil Saakashvili, and return it to the Technical University.
