Davit Mirtskhulava, Chairman of the National Committee for Large Dams in Georgia and former Minister of Energy positively evaluates the new renewable energy support scheme and says the scheme is important for the country.
According to Mirtskhulava, there are questions regarding the support mechanism for energy projects, because it is a complex and ongoing process.
"Energy projects have been stopped for five years because there was no incentive mechanism. Previously, there was a PPA-mechanism and it gave us some results. There was an increase of 800 MW, the same wind stations were built, which was unprecedented in the energy sector of independent Georgia.
The fact that a mechanism agreed with the IMF and financial institutions has been found and proposed today is also very important. Questions will remain, because this is a hard-working process, and these questions are about the cost of everything after the pandemic, which has increased by 20-30% in relation to these projects. It is necessary for the Commission to take this increase into account. Therefore, during the selection and presentation of the amount, inflation should be taken into account, how realistic the preliminary feasibility and the appropriate tariff are during the evaluation", said Mirtskhulava.
