"It is the fundamental responsibility of any government to protect its citizens and ensure that their constitutional rights are exercised in a peaceful and secure environment," said US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan, responding to the July 5 events.
"Violence is unacceptable. We need a very clear message from the Georgian authorities that those who participated in or encouraged the violence will be held accountable and everything will have a real result.
If there is not a very clear signal running that the violence will not be tolerated, it will lead to more violence. It is the fundamental responsibility of any government to protect its citizens and to ensure that their constitutional rights are upheld in a peaceful and secure environment," the ambassador said.
Let us remind you that on July 5, violent groups motivated against "Tbilisi Pride" attacked journalists, as a result of which about 50 members of the media were injured. Lekso Lashkarava, the cameraman of TV Pirveli, was seriously injured during these events and was found dead at home on July 11. An investigation and examination will determine the cause of his death.
