Retail Association: Supermarket Chains Offer Discounts on Essential “Social Basket” Products

გუდვილი

Supermarket chains across Georgia have begun offering discounts on essential goods included in the “social basket,” according to Sophio Kashakashvili, Executive Director of the Retail Association. She told BM.GE that member retailers launched these discounts nearly two weeks ago as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts.

Kashakashvili explained that competition laws prevent retailers from coordinating unified pricing, so each chain independently determines what discounts to provide. The discounted “social basket” typically includes products such as oil, rice, eggs, buckwheat, pasta, bread, sugar, and in some cases dairy products or chicken. Each chain selects at least one discounted item per category—for example, one brand of rice or one type of cooking oil—to ensure continuous affordability for consumers.

She noted that discount levels vary by retailer and are marked differently across stores. Even brands under the same holding, such as “Daily,” “Magniti,” and “Spar,” offer different discounts despite being part of one group.

According to Kashakashvili, discount capacity depends on each chain’s resources—some import products directly and can offer lower prices, while others may discount items they produce themselves.
