The Secretary of Armenia's Security Council Armen Grigoryan declined Belarusian Ambassador to Armenia Alexander Konyuk's allegations that Armenians are interested in joining the Union State of Russia and Belarus.

Earlier on Monday, the ambassador said that the Union State lacks a third member country. "I've been monitoring and watching how our brothers Armenians react, and they supported me," Konyuk said at a conference on development of integration processes in the post-Soviet space.

"We have to understand who the ambassador means by ‘Armenian brothers’. Perhaps there are people in the opposition who are his brothers and reacted that way. Armenia's constitution proclaimed Armenia as a sovereign state, and it will remain sovereign. Our mission is to protect Armenia's sovereignty. The Union State is a violation of sovereignty, because in a Union State, sovereignty is first and foremost eliminated. This is the whole problem of the Union State," Grigoryan told the Public Television of Armenia.

"I am sure that the democratic processes taking place in Armenia unambiguously limit such possibilities, even the possibility of discussing this issue," Grigoryan said.

He also said that a lot of pressure is being exerted on Armenia with regard to joining the Russia-Belarus Union, ARKA reports.
