In an effort to reduce plastic consumption, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture is considering banning the sale of drinks in plastic bottles in certain establishments. During a private sector briefing, the plans were presented as part of broader environmental initiatives.

At Sheraton Metechi Palace, eco-friendly practices have been in place for years. According to Lasha Janashia, Food and Beverage Operations Manager, the hotel has reduced plastic use by 90%, switching to glass in meeting areas, restaurants, and guest rooms. The pool area remains the only exception due to safety regulations.

Janashia noted that the new regulation could pose challenges for the business sector. Many café and restaurant owners are concerned about space limitations for alternative products, difficulties with municipal waste separation, and the higher cost of glass compared to plastic, which could affect both companies and consumers.

Regarding the pool area, Janashia emphasized that glass cannot be used for safety reasons. He suggested that businesses and suppliers need to find viable alternatives, such as Tetra Pak containers, to comply with the regulations while ensuring guest safety.
