Farmer Iva Chkonia, a partner of GDB company, started producing watermelons. Spanish "Santissima" is a small-sized, thin-skinned, uncured product with a special taste.
As Iva Chkonia told bm.ge, they have grown watermelons on half a hectare and the current year is a test year for production.
According to him, at the beginning, they received up to 10 tons of product, which in Saburtalo and Digmi "Goodwill" will cost approximately 3 GEL per kilogram.
"We, in Georgia, together with our partner Rijk Zwaan, were the first to start growing the Spanish variety "Sandissima". These are Amaltea (black, thin skin), Kongita (black, portion size), Morgan (oblong size), Vanikai (uncured). We have finished harvesting the first crop and have already brought it to Goodwill Saburtalo and Digmi. The market value is more expensive than the standard one, because we bring it under special conditions, and the price of our seedlings is several times higher than the price of a standard watermelon seedling.
I think the project will be justified. We will observe the species and, taking into account the sales, we will decide which variety to bring. We would like to offer customers a special kind of watermelons from the beginning of June to the end of August", Iva Chkhonia notes.
