Parliament will establish a special commission to address food prices, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze confirmed in response to BM.GE. He emphasized that the commission’s creation is a parliamentary decision and will take place with the start of the spring session.
Regarding alleged cartel activity, Kobakhidze refrained from commenting at this stage, noting that relevant authorities are investigating and will take action if necessary. He stressed the importance of listening to all stakeholders to find ways to reduce prices effectively.
Today, the government’s “Price Coordination Commission,” chaired by PM Kobakhidze, is meeting with food producers following prior meetings with supermarkets and distributors. Last week, investigative units from the State Security Service and the Ministry of Finance requested documentation from several retail and distribution networks regarding high food prices.
The parliamentary commission will complement these efforts, aiming to monitor market developments, gather insights from producers and distributors, and work toward strategies to stabilize and potentially lower food prices for consumers across the country.
