At the session of the eighth convocation of the Tbilisi City Council, deputies re-elected Zurab Abashidze as the Chairman. His candidacy was supported by members of the ruling Georgian Dream party during today’s vote.
Alongside Abashidze, several leadership positions were also filled: Beka Davituliani was elected as the First Deputy Chairman, Tinatin Nibloshvili as the Second Deputy Chairman, and Levan Japaridze as the Third Deputy Chairman of the City Council.
The first session was officially opened by Giorgi Kalandarishvili, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC).
Zurab Abashidze has held senior roles within the Tbilisi City Council before. During the seventh convocation, he served as Deputy Chairman, and later assumed the position of Chairman after Giorgi Tkemaladze was appointed Vice Mayor of Tbilisi.
In addition to his local government career, Abashidze has an extensive background in diplomacy and national politics. Between 2017 and 2021, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Republic of Kazakhstan, and from 2012 to 2016, he was a Member of Parliament and Deputy Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia.
