The international tender for the feasibility study of the planned Tbilisi–Rustavi, Tbilisi Airport, Tbilisi–Lilo and Tbilisi–Mtskheta urban rail project has been extended until August 3. This is the fourth extension of the tender, which was launched on May 13 through the Asian Development Bank (ADB) procurement system.

The consultancy service is estimated at $393,000. The selected company will assess the project’s technical, economic, financial, environmental and social feasibility, including passenger demand forecasts, station locations, rolling stock needs, investment costs and financial sustainability.

The study will examine options for developing rail connections between Tbilisi and surrounding areas, including Rustavi, Mtskheta, Marneuli and Lilo, mainly using existing Georgian Railway infrastructure. The project aims to reduce pressure on roads as traffic congestion increases due to population growth and rising vehicle numbers.

The winning consultant will have eight months to prepare a feasibility report that could serve as the basis for future financing and implementation. The idea of an overground metro connecting Tbilisi and Rustavi was first announced in 2018, but the project was later suspended.
