Tbilisi City Hall will allocate GEL 155 million this year for environmental protection measures, an all-time high, according to Deputy Mayor Andria Basilaia. The announcement was made during a public presentation of ongoing and completed environmental projects.

Basilaia emphasized that this year’s budget far exceeds what was spent in the past decade.

“Between 2010 and 2017, only GEL 97 million was allocated in total. This year alone, we are investing significantly more. The results are already visible, not just in rehabilitated parks and squares, but also in many vital ecological initiatives,” he stated.

One of the key focuses is restoring the city’s greenery and improving air quality. Basilaia noted that phytosanitary work had been neglected for years, resulting in widespread pine tree disease, which has now been fully addressed. Additional efforts include increasing grass cover and introducing mulching to improve both aesthetics and air quality.

Several major projects are underway:

  • Vera Park rehabilitation is nearing completion, with full restoration respecting the park’s historical layout. The reopening is expected in September.
  • Construction of Military City Park in Samgori is described as an unprecedented project. Formerly filled with abandoned buildings, the area is being transformed into a large municipal green space, set to be completed in 2026.
  • A revitalization project around Lake Gldani aims to improve both the lake’s ecosystem and the surrounding area, creating a new recreational zone for residents.

“These projects are not only important for today’s Tbilisi but are long-term investments in the health and quality of life of future generations,” Basilaia concluded.
