The Telecommunications Operators Association is calling for equal access tariffs for energy infrastructure, citing price discrimination and unequal conditions for telecom companies. Association representative Ucha Seturi said smaller operators are particularly affected by differences in fees charged by energy companies.
Seturi said recent legislation allowing telecom operators to use non-telecommunications infrastructure, including energy poles for cable installation, was a positive step. However, he said larger operators may benefit from lower rates under contracts signed earlier, creating unequal competitive conditions.
“Access is vital for us, and at minimum, this inequality needs to be eliminated,” Seturi said. He added that telecom companies compete in the retail market, including in regions where low prices make equal infrastructure costs particularly important.
The association is also seeking greater clarity on cost-based tariffs. Seturi called for dialogue with regulators and other stakeholders to establish clearer pricing principles, help operators plan their long-term development and ensure a level playing field.
