Georgia’s airport cargo infrastructure is facing growing pressure as available terminal capacity approaches its limits, with increased shipments from Chinese e-commerce platform Temu contributing to the challenge, according to Giorgi Kopilashvili, CEO of a UPS-authorized contractor company.
Kopilashvili told BMG that cargo terminal capacity remains one of the sector’s main challenges. He noted that express delivery companies require fast processing of incoming shipments, with sorting and delivery often expected on the same day, meaning even minor delays can affect operations.
According to him, the arrival of larger volumes of Temu shipments reduced available terminal and handling capacity and created some operational difficulties. However, he said the situation is currently under control, with customs procedures and cargo processing operating normally. He added that further growth in volumes will require expanded terminal space and the introduction of modern technologies.
Kopilashvili also highlighted the need to increase sorting center capacity and modernize logistics processes. According to the United Airports of Georgia, more than 21,500 tons of cargo were transported through Georgian airports in the first six months of 2026, representing a 29% increase compared with the same period last year.
