Temur Chkonia Plans Nationwide Plastic Recycling Initiative in Georgia

თემურ ჭყონია

Temur Chkonia, founder of Coca-Cola Bottlers Georgia, is developing a nationwide plastic collection and recycling industry in Georgia. The project is in its final planning stage, and with government approval, the first recycling plant could start operating within a few months. Chkonia says the initiative will focus on collection rather than bans, ensuring people think twice before discarding plastic bottles.

The project is modeled on successful international recycling systems, adapted for Georgia. Chkonia highlighted that no country has fully banned plastic bottles, and the focus should be on creating a functional recycling infrastructure. He also mentioned discussions with the German Development Bank and consultations with foreign experts to refine the plan.

The initiative will target all types of plastic waste, including household chemical containers and shampoo bottles, not just beverage packaging. The goal is to create a large-scale recycling system, reduce imported recycled plastic, and build a profitable industry within Georgia. Chkonia believes this approach is more effective than bans, which historically produce minimal results without industrial recycling.

Multiple plants are planned across the country, with investment levels depending on local waste volumes. Chkonia stressed that a government partnership is essential to implement the project quickly and efficiently. The initiative is expected to generate new jobs, income sources, and a sustainable recycling sector, while significantly reducing plastic waste nationwide.
