The Tbilisi City Court has sentenced Nika Gvaramia, a leader of the Ahali Party, to eight months in prison for failing to comply with a request from the parliamentary temporary investigative commission, which is studying the activities of the 2003-2012 government and its officials.
In addition, Gvaramia has been barred from holding public office for two years.
Judge Jvebe Nachkebia announced the verdict. Gvaramia was not present at the final hearing.
Law enforcement authorities detained him on June 13, after the court replaced his bail with imprisonment due to his refusal to pay the GEL 30,000 bail imposed for failing to appear before the commission. Gvaramia showed up at the penitentiary institution in Rustavi on his own.
