The government of Georgia is going to limit old car imports in the country from 2024. This was one of the issues discussed at the meeting of the economic council of the government. We are talking about mandatory introduction of the Euro 5 standard for cars, according to which the import of cars below the Euro 5 standard will be restricted from next year. According to the government, the regulation will apply to cars manufactured before 2013.

"Implementation of this initiative will significantly contribute to reducing the emission of harmful substances into the atmospheric air", - according to the government administration.

"Citizens are not yet ready for such type of changes", - this is the position of the head of the Auto Importers Association on the announced changes.

Lasha Darbaiseli told bm.ge that in 2013, by restricting the import of cars manufactured before 2013, both the industry and the segment of citizens who cannot afford new cars will be affected.

"Thus, we will harm the whole sector, as well as the Georgian consumer, the buyer who cannot afford to buy cars older than 2013. I believe that the citizens of Georgia are not yet ready for such changes.

Cars manufactured before 2013 make up about 30-40% of total imports. Accordingly, car importers will suffer a lot", - Lasha Darbaiseli said.
