Kanat Sharlapaev, head of the Kazakh state holding Baiterek, has filed an application to renounce Russian citizenship. Russian President Vladimir Putin satisfied him by decree. Sharlapaev’s daughter, who was born in 2017 in Moscow, also left Russian citizenship.
Sharlapaev received Russian citizenship by birthright – he was born in the Saratov region. The administrator of “Baiterek” also has British citizenship.
Sharlapaev took over as Chairman of the Board of Baiterek in August 2022. Prior to that, he worked as Chief Financial Officer of Citibank Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, and Senior Vice President of Citibank Kazakhstan.
Baiterek is a Kazakhstani development institution, whose shareholder is the government of the republic. The holding includes seven subsidiaries-joint stock companies with 100% participation of the holding, including the housing construction savings bank Otbasy, which in 2022 ranked first in the ranking of the most reliable banks in Kazakhstan according to Forbes. At the beginning of September of the new year, Baiterek bought its subsidiary bank in Kazakhstan from Sberbank.
Earlier in 2022, the founder of Tinkoff Bank Oleg Tinkov, the founder of the Revolut fintech startup Nikolai Storonsky, the entrepreneur and investor Ruben Vardanyan, the IT investor and former co-owner of Mail.ru Group Yuri Milner, and the founder of Freedom Finance Timur Turlov refused Russian citizens, Europe-Cities reports.
