In January-August 2024, the imports of cars from China to Georgia doubled, automobiles worth USD 27 million were imported to Georgia, which was 111% more than in the same period of the previous year. With the mentioned increase, China took the sixth place in the 2-billion car import sector of Georgia. For comparison, in the same period of 2023, China ranked the 11th place in the ranking of Georgia's auto imports.
According to Geostat, a total of 1,797 vehicles were imported from China to Georgia during this period, the average price of which was USD 15.4 thousand.
According to the statistics, 568 of the cars imported from China were electric cars, the value of which amounted to USD 14.6 million. As of this indicator, China is the second player in the import of electric cars to Georgia after the USA, from which 1,429 electric cars were imported in January-August 2024.
In addition, it is important to note that the creation of an auto market in Kutaisi is being discussed in order to bring closer auto-trade relations with China, which was announced by Zhou Qian, the Chinese Ambassador to Georgia, in May 2024.
"Many Chinese companies are interested in investing in Georgia. It is planned to organize a market for cars imported from China in Georgia. Maybe this fair will be located in Kutaisi. There are many more investments and plans of Chinese companies," the ambassador said.
