A three-day NATO summit begins today in Washington. The Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, speaking at the summit, said that supporting Ukraine would be the most urgent task of NATO.
"I hope that the heads of states and governments will agree on an essential package for Ukraine," said Stoltenberg.
He said allies would agree on Ukraine's financial pledge, and he also expects more immediate military aid to Ukraine, more bilateral security agreements and work on enhanced military interoperability. The Secretary General of the Alliance emphasized that all these elements "create a bridge to NATO membership and a very strong package for Ukraine at the summit." "Ukraine is getting closer to NATO," Stoltenberg added.
According to him, the topics of the summit will also be deterrence and defense and global partnership.
The Secretary General invited the leaders of Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea to the summit to further deepen cooperation, including Ukraine, cyber and new technology support."The closer the authoritarian actors become, the more important it is to work closely with our friends in the Indo-Pacific region," Stoltenberg noted.
