Georgia has expanded its Universal Healthcare Program to finance the high-cost medication Jakavi for the treatment of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a serious complication that can develop after bone marrow transplantation, the Ministry of Health announced.
According to the ministry, Georgian citizens are already eligible for state-funded bone marrow transplant procedures both in Georgia and abroad. However, some patients develop GVHD following transplantation—a condition in which the donor’s transplanted immune cells attack the recipient’s body.
The ministry said that in such cases, access to modern, high-tech drug therapy is vital.
In addition, the ministry announced that the state-procured medication Jakavi is now available to all beneficiaries with oncohematological diseases, including children under the age of 18.
