Embassy of United States in Georgia has published a statement about ongoing politicial situation in Georgia. Embassy is urging Georgian government to "proceed with balance and restraint."

U.S. Embassy Statement Following June 20 Protests:

"The U.S. Embassy is following closely developments in Georgia after the June 20 protests in Tbilisi. Although it is important that acts of violence, as well as incidents of excessive use of force against demonstrators, be investigated, we urge the Georgian authorities to proceed with balance and restraint. What is most needed at this time is a dialogue among all political actors that will strengthen Georgia’s democracy."

Today, with 91 votes, the Parliament of Georgia has lifted immunity from MP Nika Melia of the opposition United National Movement (UNM).

The decision followed the Prosecutors Office’s request of June 25, charging him for inciting and heading mass violence on the night of 20-21 June on Rustaveli Avenue.

Investigation against Melia has been launched on charges of organization of, participation in and leading a group activity accompanied by violence under article 225 of Georgia’s Criminal Code.
