In May 2023, the retail trade volume increased by 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU.
In June 2023 compared with June 2022, the calendar adjusted retail sales index decreased by 1.4% in the euro area and by 1.6% in the EU.
Monthly comparison by retail sector and by Member State
In the euro area in June 2023, compared with May 2023, the volume of retail trade decreased by 0.3% for food, drinks and tobacco and by 0.2% for non-food products, while it increased by 1.0% for automotive fuels.
In the EU, the volume of retail trade decreased by 0.4% for food, drinks and tobacco and by 0.2% for non-food products, while it increased by 0.7% for automotive fuels.
Among Member States for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases in the total retail trade volume were registered in the Slovenia (-2.6%), Romania (-1.9%) and Portugal (-1.6%). The highest increases were observed in Luxembourg (+2.6%), Netherlands (+1.5%) and Belgium (+1.2%).
Annual comparison by retail sector and by Member State
In the euro area in June 2023, compared with June 2022, the volume of retail trade decreased by 3.5% for food, drinks and tobacco and by 0.4% for automotive fuels, while it remained unchanged for non-food products.
In the EU, the retail trade volume decreased by 3.6% for food, drinks and tobacco, by 1.3% for automotive fuels and by 0.2% for non-food products.
Among Member States for which data are available, the largest yearly decreases in the total retail trade volume were registered in Slovenia (-15.7%), Estonia (-8.7%) and Hungary (-8.3%). The highest increases were observed in Luxembourg (+16.3%), Spain (+7.5%) and Cyprus (+6.5%).
