Georgia’s watermelon exports have seen a remarkable rise in 2025. According to data from the National Statistics Office, the country exported 728 tons of watermelons worth USD 275,700 between January and June—representing a 120% increase in volume and a 191.4% increase in value compared to the same period last year.

In 2024, Georgian watermelons were exported exclusively to Armenia, totaling 329 tons valued at USD 94,600. This year, however, the list of export destinations has expanded significantly, with Georgia now selling watermelons to three countries:

  • Armenia – 638 tons | USD 221,400
  • Russia – 68 tons | USD 39,800
  • Romania – 21 tons | USD 14,600

This diversification of export markets signals growing international interest in Georgian produce, particularly in neighboring and regional markets.

Despite the export growth, Georgia remains a net importer of watermelons. In the first half of 2025, the country imported 9,560 tons worth approximately USD 2.8 million, which is a 23% increase from the previous year.

Turkey continues to dominate the import market, supplying over half of the total watermelon imports. Here’s the breakdown of Georgia’s top suppliers:

  • Turkey – 5,326 tons | USD 1.6 million
  • Iran – 4,036 tons | USD 1.2 million
  • Azerbaijan – 96.4 tons | USD 30,900
  • Uzbekistan – 66 tons | USD 19,800
  • Netherlands – 3.1 tons | USD 6,000

According to the statistics, Georgia imports watermelons at an average price of USD 0.30 per kilogram and exports them at USD 0.37 per kilogram. While this shows a slight profit margin, it also highlights the broader dependence on imports to meet domestic demand, especially outside the local harvest season.
