One of the topics of discussion in the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations was the ongoing processes in Georgia.
Talks focused on the need for judicial and electoral reforms, the April 19 agreement, and the situation in Georgia after the 2012 elections.
According to Senator James Risch, he and other members are disappointed with the recent developments in Georgia.
"I and the other members of the committee are disappointed with what is happening in Georgia. Senator Shaheen and I were in Georgia in 2012 when the elections were held there. We thought it would be the beginning of a new phase, but since then we have been regularly disappointed with the developments.
Different parties are constantly coming to Washington and each of them is trying to engage us and convince us to support their political maneuvers, which is what every country is doing. We keep telling them that they have to solve it themselves. We are not going to choose a side, but they are not making much progress," Risch said.
Candidates for Assistant Secretary of State also spoke about the current situation in Georgia.
In response to a question from Senator Risch, one of the candidates, Karen Donfried, said that the implementation of electoral and judicial reform in Georgia is important.
"If approved, I will continue to work for the full and speedy implementation of the agreement signed on April 19. I call on all parties in Georgia to support the agreement. It is difficult to even properly emphasize how important electoral and judicial reform are for Georgia.
Georgia has taken important steps towards strengthening democracy, but it has a long way to go and I urge them to cover this distance," said Karen Donfried.
