We had a 64% increase in ferry shipments in 2024 – APM Terminals

APM Terminals Poti •

The transportation sector finished 2024 with growth. According to official statistics from Geostat, both air, rail and sea carriers experienced growth.

Georgian ports and terminals processed more than 15 million 562 thousand tons of cargo last year, 5.8 percent more than in 2023. Of this, 45.7 percent was general cargo. Statistics show that since 2022, bulk cargo has decreased, while general cargo has increased.

According to the administrative director of the Poti Sea Port, last year growth was recorded only in the ferry direction.

As of Zviad Chkhartishvili, the decrease in 2024 was due to higher than expected growth in 2023, while over the past 10 years, the volume of cargo processed by the port is steadily growing.

"If we compare direct numbers, we have a decrease, but we cannot call this a reduction, because if we look at it in the context of 10 years, we have had constant stable growth. Therefore, we should take the indicators of 2021-2022 for comparison. Compared to 2022, we still have growth. The first 2 months of 2025 also went quite normally", Zviad Chkhartishvili said.
