Gocha Chkhaidze, founder of the wine and alcoholic beverage company “Askaneli,” believes that stronger dialogue between the private sector and the government is essential for the continued development of Georgia’s winemaking industry.

Speaking to BM.GE, Chkhaidze emphasized that while the state plays an active role in supporting agriculture and wine production, there is still a need for more consistent communication and joint discussions between businesses and policymakers.

The alcoholic beverage production sector has significant potential for growth. The state is doing a lot, much has been done this year for farmers, and its contribution to winemaking is truly substantial. However, I think we need to communicate more. It’s important to discuss what comes after each decision because dialogue is necessary. We, as producers, understand market realities and conditions in different countries, and that’s why these conversations are vital,” said Chkhaidze.

When asked whether there is currently a lack of communication between the private and public sectors, the founder of Askaneli admitted that the business community also bears some responsibility.

This is partly our fault. The government doesn’t refuse dialogue, it’s more that we, as businesses, don’t take enough initiative. We should be requesting these meetings more often. The relationship is not closed; there is communication and partnership, but we can still do better,” he explained.

Chkhaidze also noted that even the world’s leading wine-producing countries, such as France, Italy, and Spain, face similar challenges, making dialogue between the government and producers a universal need.

Even in countries like France and Italy, where wine production is at its peak, communication between business and the state is an ongoing issue. Talking to business is always important, and there’s always room for improvement. We need to develop in this direction as well,” he added.
