Zurab Pololikashvili, the Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, on Tuesday emphasised the importance of tourism in “promoting peace and prosperity” and described the sector as the “most humane”, in a video address promoting World Tourism Day celebrations scheduled to take place in the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi on Friday.
This year's theme of the event, Tourism and Peace, will be at the forefront of discussions during the event.
"Our sector is the most humane. Each trip is related to tourism, which unites the world and brings tourism closer. Tourism is based on trust and respect”, Pololikashvili said.
He stressed the impact of the industry in driving “inclusive growth and prosperity” and protecting countries from conflicts.
"This year, on this day, our planet is engulfed in wars and threats. With one in four of the world's population living in conflict zones, many of us have experienced war firsthand, and its impact extends far beyond the conflict zones. We must stand together immediately for peace”, Pololikashvili said.
"We need tourism values now more than ever. Let us respect international law and the values of the United Nations. Above all, let's work together as a united sector to make tourism a beacon of hope. When peace comes to conflict zones, we stand ready to help people rebuild and reconnect. No matter where you are and no matter how you celebrate Tourism Day, I wish you peace and prosperity”, he added.
World Tourism Day has been celebrated by the UNWTO since 1979.
