The United States has imposed financial sanctions on Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri. The relevant decision is alrady published on the US Treasury website. Gomelauri was included in the sanctions list within the framework of the Global Magnitsky Act, which was related to the illegal use of force by the Ministry of Internal Affairs against peaceful demonstrators. On Friday, financial sanctions were also imposed on Mirza Kezevadze, Deputy Head of the Department of Special Tasks.
Vakhtang Gomelauri has been holding the post of Minister of Internal Affairs for the second time since September 2019, before that he was the head ofState Security Service of Georgia between 2015 and 2019. Vakhtang Gomelauri filed his last asset declaration in June 2024, according to which he was the highest-paid minister in the Cabinet of Ministers last year, and his salary amounted to 96,788 GEL.
According to Vakhtang Gomelauri’s declaration, he owns a 201 square meter apartment on Chavchavadze Avenue No. 37 in Tbilisi, for which he paid 542 thousand GEL in 2022. He also owns a 2,000 square meter plot of land and a 650 square meter house on it in Tabakhmela, and land plots in the village of Gorana, Tianeti district.
