China Railway Tunnel Group Co. Ltd. (CRTG) will build Georgia’s 11.3-km Batumi-Sarpi highway under a GEL 809 million contract. The project includes a 1.47-km bridge over the Chorokhi River, a 7.6-km tunnel and 500 meters of bank protection. Construction is expected to take 48 months and will be financed by an Asian Development Bank loan and Georgia’s state budget.
CRTG is already involved in several major infrastructure projects in Georgia. On September 1, it was selected to build the Tsitsamuri-Avalani tunnel and a 7-km road section, the second lot of the Tbilisi bypass, under a GEL 499 million contract. The company is also carrying out interior finishing works on the 9-km Kvesheti-Kobi road tunnel under a GEL 902 million contract signed in 2019, as well as the 4.5-km Stepantsminda-Gveleti road project under a GEL 215 million contract signed in 2024.
CRTG is a Chinese state-owned engineering company specializing in tunnels, underground structures and complex infrastructure. Founded in 1978, it is part of China Railway Group Limited (CREC) and operates in engineering, design, research and development, tunnel construction and specialized equipment, including tunnel boring machines (TBMs).
The company has extensive international experience, including railway and road tunnels, metro systems and underground infrastructure. Its notable projects include Uzbekistan’s 19.2-km Qamchiq railway tunnel, part of the Angren-Pap railway line, as well as metro infrastructure projects in Singapore and Chile. The new Batumi-Sarpi road will connect directly to the Batumi bypass, diverting international and transit traffic away from densely populated coastal resort areas and improving road safety and traffic conditions.
