Which Programs Will Regional Universities Admit Students to This Year?

გივი მიქანაძე

Under the new higher education reform based on the “one city – one faculty” principle, academic programs will be strictly divided among both Tbilisi-based and regional universities. The government says the goal is to align university profiles with their traditional strengths and labor market needs.

According to the Minister of Education, only Batumi State University and Kutaisi State University will retain a wide, multifunctional range of faculties. These two institutions will continue to offer diverse academic programs.

Other regional universities will narrow their focus to agriculture, tourism, and pedagogy. This applies to Zugdidi, Gori, Akhaltsikhe, and Telavi State Universities, which will specialize in these priority areas defined by the reform.

The minister emphasized that admission quotas were set based on labor market analysis. Additional student intake will be allowed only in exceptional cases, such as when applicants have equal exam scores or when they come from the occupied territories.
