“I’m not blaming anyone... but I want to tell our business, before it’s too late, speak up, people, in your own interests, - with these words, financier Nika Shurgaia once again appealed to members of Georgia’s business community, criticizing their silence on the country’s current political and economic situation, including the stalled progress of the EU candidate status.

According to Shurgaia, the government led by Bidzina Ivanishvili is gradually tightening its control over all sectors of the country, comparing the situation to “a suffocating snake wrapping itself around everything.”

“Our country is facing the very real risk of being strangled by this snake, and we must free ourselves in time,” said Shurghaia, adding that he understands the hesitation of citizens and entrepreneurs who wonder ‘who will take over after the ruling party’s departure?’

Using a symbolic reference to Georgian literature, he called for courage and unity:

“Let’s not wait for Saint George. Among us, we can find Tarieli, Avtandili, Pridoni, the people and forces who will stand up to this snake. This is everyone’s fight, including business.”
