As from 2019, the country should start waste sorting and treatment. The solid waste management legislation and action plan set correspondent requirements for municipalities. According to the advisor of the Head of Solid Waste Management Company, municipalities are obliged to collect and transport waste in fractions.

“The state will support them by supplying containers. Certain number of containers has already been sent to them. Although their need of containers could not be fully satisfied, but the necessary quantity will be delivered to them on stage-by-stage basis. They all have waste management plans, according to which they should manage household waste,” – states Khatuna Chikviladze.

According to her, the obligation of the Solid Waste Management Company is to manage waste deposits. As states Chikviladze, the work has already started and by 2023, ten waste deposits will be organized in Georgia in compliance with modern standards. “We ar in the process of obtaining permissions for new waste deposits. This year a tender will be launched and construction process will start. As from 2019, we are thinking of going through same procedures in Kvemo Kartli. Next will be in Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, followed by Shida Kartli, Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Samtskhe-Javakheti”, - states Chikviladze.

As to waste treatment plant construction project, as we know, such a project will be implemented in Lilo. Chikviladze says that at the present stage municipalities do not have enough capacities to implement such projects in regions. However, the advisor of the head of the company thinks that a waste treatment plant might be constructed after introduction in country of waste deposits compliant with modern standards.

“In regions, there is not as much waste as needed for a plant. It should be at least 100 tons daily, which resource municipalities do not have so far,” – states Chikviladze.
