Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated at a Cabinet meeting on Monday that the Economy Ministry would draught legislative proposals on food pricing that would reference the European Directive on Fair Trade.

“Several discussions on food pricing were held, with the active participation of Ministries of Economy, Finance, and Agriculture, as well as the Competition Agency’s leadership. Meetings were held with importers as well as major retail owners. Added costs for food for customers turn out to be 70–80%, and in certain cases, 100%. Of course, this is unacceptable,” the Prime Minister remarked.

According to him, the government has begun actively working on ways to address this issue.

“These issues are legislated in European countries and throughout the West. As a result, the Ministry of Economy will now prepare the required legislation under the European Directive on Fair Trade,” Garibashvili added.

The prime minister hopes that the parliament will back the legislative proposals.
