Due to COVID-19, online grocery was the star performer of e-commerce in Georgia during 2020. Thanks to huge boost in value sales of grocery, Goodwill has edged past Amazon.

"While third party merchants led in terms of value sales, Goodwill was the largest e-commerce player in 2020 and edged passed Amazon, due to the huge increase in value sales of food and drink, as consumers tried to avoid exposure to COVID-19,” reads the recent market research report of EUROMONITOR INTERNATIONAL, on E-Commerce in Georgia.

The website of goodwill is the online version of the company’s store-based chain of hypermarkets and supermarkets and offers most of the stock present in the chain.

Pursuant to the report, Amazon.com remains the leader in Georgia, due to wide range and wide awareness.

“Amazon enjoys a high level of brand awareness among Georgian consumers. Apparel and footwear, consumer electronics and media products are popular among the retailer’s customers”. Overall, according to the authors of the research, “popularity of international e-commerce sites were affected by currency devaluation”.

Increasing access to faster internet speeds will drive value growth, reads an abstract of the research, adding “improvements and rising trust amongst consumers in online payment systems supports e-commerce growth”.
