Number of Enterprises in Greece Declined by 22.7% in 2020, Start-ups Performed Better

The start-ups in Greece has slightly (0.05%) drop in 2020, while the number of enterprises in all economic sectors declined by 22.7%.

Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles presented the biggest number of closures of enterprises in 2020. Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply presented the biggest percentage increase (92.9%) in the number of start-ups in the year 2020.

“The start-ups of enterprises in all economic sectors in the year 2020 amounted to 84,122, recording a decrease of 0.05% in comparison with the year 2019, when the respective number of start-ups was 84,164. The closures of enterprises in all economic sectors in the year 2020 amounted to 37,345, recording a decrease of 22.7% in comparison with the year 2019, when the respective number of closures was 48, 290,” reads the recent report of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). 

The economic section Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing presented in the year 2020 the biggest, in absolute size, number of start-ups of enterprises, with 14,847 start-ups. The economic section Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply presented the biggest percentage increase, 92.9%, in the number of start-ups in the year 2020 in comparison with the year 2019, while section Other Service Activities recorded the biggest percentage decrease, 37.2%, in the number of start-ups in 2020 compared to 2019.

The economic section Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles presented in the year 2020 the biggest, in absolute size, number of closures of enterprises, with 8,082 closures. The Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply section recorded percentage increase, 26.4%, in the number of closures of enterprises in the year 2020 in comparison with the year 2019, while section Information and Communication presented the biggest percentage decrease, 40.3%, in the number of closures of enterprises in 2020 compared to 2019.

The Société Anonyme (S.A.) enterprises recorded the biggest increase, 18.9%, in the number of start-ups in the year 2020 in comparison with the year 2019, while the Limited Liability Companies (LLC) recorded the respective biggest decrease, 26.4%.
 
The Joint Ventures recorded the biggest decrease, 37.4%, in the number of closures of enterprises in the year 2020 in comparison with the year 2019, while there was no increase in the number of closures of enterprises in any Legal Form, between the years 2020 and 2019.
 
Most enterprises, in absolute terms, that changed their economic activity between the years 2019 and 2020, were classified in the section Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles in the year 2019 and amounted to 2,404. Most of them, at a rate 32.0%, moved in 2020 to the section Accommodation and Food Service Activities.
 
This was followed by 2,280 enterprises classified in the section Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing in the year 2019, out of which, at a rate of 43.7%, moved to the economic section Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles.
 
In the third quarter of 2020 compared to the respective quarter of 2019, was recorded the biggest annual increase, 18.6%, in the number of start-ups of enterprises in all sections of economy. The respective biggest decrease, 26.2%, was recorded in the second quarter of 2020.
 
In the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the respective quarter of 2019 was recorded the biggest annual decrease, 37.6%, in the number of closures of enterprises in all sections of economy, while there was no increase in the number of closures in any quarter of 2020, compared to 2019.
 
In the first quarter of 2020 the biggest increase in the number of start-ups of enterprises, 150.0%, compared to the first quarter of 2019 was recorded in the section Mining and Quarrying. It is noted that this increase corresponds to a single digit number of starts-ups. The biggest decrease in the number of start-ups, 4.4%, in the first quarter 2020 compared to the first quarter 2019 was recorded in the section Other Service Activities. 
 
In the second quarter of 2020 the biggest increase in the number of start-ups of enterprises, 14.4%, compared to the second quarter of 2019 was recorded in the section Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply, while the respective biggest decrease, 68.8%, was recorded in the section Other Service Activities.
In the third quarter of 2020 the biggest increase in the number of start-ups of enterprises, 112.5%, compared to the third quarter of 2019 was recorded in the section Water Supply, Sewerage, Waste Management and Remediation Activities, while the respective biggest decrease, 9.2%, was recorded in the section Financial and Insurance Activities.
 
In the fourth quarter of 2020 the biggest increase in the number of start-ups of enterprises, 140.2%, compared to the fourth quarter of 2019 was recorded in the section Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply, while the respective biggest decrease, 77.8%, was recorded in the section Mining and Quarrying. It is noted that this decrease corresponds to a single digit number of starts-ups.
 
As for the closure of enterprises by quarter, in the first quarter of 2020 the biggest increase in the number of closures of enterprises, 8.2%, compared to the first quarter of 2019 was recorded in the Section Other Service Activities, while the respective biggest decrease, 75.0%, was recorded in the Section Mining and Quarrying. It is noted that this decrease corresponds to a single digit number of closures.
 
In the second quarter of 2020 the biggest increase in the number of closures of enterprises, 60.0%, compared to the second quarter of 2019 was recorded in the section Public Administration and Defense; Compulsory Social Security, while the respective biggest decrease, 47.6% was recorded in the section Information and Communication.
 
In the third quarter of 2020 the biggest increase in the number of closures of enterprises, 45.8%, compared to the third quarter of 2019 was recorded in the section Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply, while the respective biggest decrease, 50.0%, was recorded in the section Mining and Quarrying. It is noted that this decrease corresponds to a single digit number of closures.
 
In the fourth quarter of 2020 the biggest increase in the number of closures of enterprises, 102.9%, compared to the fourth quarter of 2019 was recorded in the section Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply, while the respective biggest decrease, 61.5%, was recorded in the section Other Service Activities.
