More than half of the ongoing projects under the Municipal Development Fund have been identified as problematic, according to Infrastructure Minister Revaz Sokhadze.
Speaking during an interpellation session in the Parliament, Sokhadze said that following an internal review at the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure, a number of systemic issues were uncovered within the project management process.
“As a result of the study at the Municipal Development Fund, unfortunately, a number of problems were identified,” Sokhadze said. “A weak system of project planning and supervision has led to many delayed or completely suspended projects.”
According to the minister, out of 214 ongoing projects, 161 were classified as problematic, with a combined value exceeding GEL 1 billion.
Sokhadze explained that the issues range from slow implementation and project delays to quality deficiencies and even suspended works.
“In several cases, the poor quality of construction requires verification and re-evaluation of already completed works. If questions arise regarding the quality of ongoing projects, we are obliged to study the matter in detail and continue the works only after receiving an expert opinion,” he added.
The minister’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns about project oversight and execution within one of the government’s key infrastructure development bodies.
