Georgia’s National Forestry Agency detected 48 violations related to forestry activities in July, including 41 cases of illegal logging and timber transportation.
According to the agency, nearly 46 cubic meters of illegally harvested firewood and construction timber of various species were seized and placed in the agency’s designated storage yards. The largest number of illegal logging cases was recorded in Imereti, with 10 violations, followed by Kvemo Kartli with 8 cases and Kakheti with 7.
The agency also reported five cases of unauthorized occupation of state forest areas in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Guria, Shida Kartli, Kakheti, and Kvemo Kartli. In addition, two unregistered sawmills were identified in Samtskhe-Javakheti and Imereti regions.
Overall, during the first seven months of the year, National Forestry Agency employees identified 439 cases of illegal timber extraction across Georgia.
