Officials from the Kakheti Forestry Service and the Kakheti Police Department under the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) have uncovered illegal logging involving an exceptionally large quantity of timber.
According to the National Forestry Agency, a local resident near the village of Omalo illegally harvested and stacked 28 logs of beech timber totalling 12 cubic metres. An off-road vehicle intended for transporting the illegally logged timber was also discovered at the site.
The case contains elements of a criminal offence. The vehicle has been impounded, and the illegally harvested timber has been transferred to the Akhmeta forestry yard for further disposal.
“To prevent the illegal exploitation of natural resources, personnel across all nine regional forestry services are actively working on the ground. We monitor infractions using modern technological tools. This specific incident was exposed as a result of a joint operation conducted by the Kakheti Forestry Service and the Kakheti Police Department. We will continue to actively collaborate with the relevant authorities in this direction going forward,” stated Besik Amiranashvili, Head of the National Forestry Agency.
