64% Of Higher Education Institutions Are Located In Tbilisi - Geostat

At the beginning of the 2024/2025 academic year, 63 higher education institutions were in Georgia, of which - 19 state and 44 private institutions. 64% of higher education institutions are located in Tbilisi, - according to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

At the beginning of the 2024/2025 academic year, 54.2 thousand students were enrolled in Georgian higher education institutions, out of them 30.5 thousand in state universities and 23.7 thousand in private universities. Student admissions decreased by 0.2 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

The number of students in Georgian higher education institutions amounted to 187.8 thousand, which is 5.6 percent more compared to the previous academic year. 57.7 percent of the total number of students study in state higher education institutions and 42.3 percent in private institutions. 52.8 percent of students are female and 47.2 percent are male.

In 2024, 29.6 thousand students graduated from higher education institutions, which is 12.4 percent more compared to the previous year. 60.2 percent of the graduates are women and 39.8 percent are men. The number of graduates in state higher education institutions is 28% higher than the number of graduates in private universities.

The number of foreign students in Georgian higher education institutions amounted to 37.1 thousand, which is 20.9 percent higher than the previous year. Number of professors in higher education institutions is 11.5 thousand, which is 2.0 percent higher than the same indicator of the previous year.

In 2024, 700 doctoral students were admitted to the universities which is 24.7 percent less than the previous year. At the same time, the number of doctoral students decreased by 15.3 percent and amounted to 3 023.

Compared to the previous year, the number of persons who completed their work for doctoral degrees has decreased by 15.9 percent and amounted to 438.
