The Asian Development Bank on Wednesday said it had approved a €46.3 million policy-based loan to help improve access to quality and affordable healthcare in Georgia.

The Bank added it would disburse the financing once the Georgian Government had implemented a “range of reforms” to improve health sector governance and regulation, increase publicly funded primary healthcare and specialised outpatient and diagnostic services and enhance the sector’s operational efficiency and financial sustainability.

The loan will be offered under the ADB’s Health Sector Enhancement Programme. Yevgeniy Zhukov, the ADB Director General for Central and West Asia, said the programme would be “particularly beneficial” for the poor, women and vulnerable groups.

Brian Chin, the ADB Senior Health Specialist, added the programme would also help Georgia prepare its healthcare providers and the general public against health-related impacts of climate change.
