In parallel with the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG), the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance has also entered distribution and sales companies.
“We confirm that, on the basis of the relevant court rulings, documents are being seized from various companies,” the Investigation Service told BM.GE.
For context, at the end of last year, Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced active engagement with distribution companies and retail chains. According to him, food prices in Georgia are significantly higher than in European countries, which he attributes to the high markups imposed by distributors and retailers. Kobakhidze instructed law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the issue to identify any elements of criminal wrongdoing. He also noted that, if necessary, antimonopoly mechanisms would be used. In addition, he appealed to Parliament to create a special commission to examine the issue using relevant parliamentary tools.
Meanwhile, a government coordination commission on food prices has been established, chaired by Prime Minister Kobakhidze.
On 20 January 2026, the commission held its first meeting at the Government Administration, where it developed a concrete action plan. According to Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili, intensive work with the private sector has been scheduled. On 21 January, representatives of the “price commission” met with supermarket representatives regarding elevated product prices. After the meeting, Kvrivishvili stated that the private sector shares the government’s vision for price reductions. Kobakhidze noted that similar meetings will continue with both distributors and local producers. The commission will also work on issues related to medicine and fuel prices. The results of its work will be presented to the public by the end of April.
The Retail Association announced that all member companies are fully and smoothly cooperating with the investigation authorities. According to the statement, all procedures are being carried out in a calm environment, with complete adherence to legal norms and established procedural frameworks.
