Geka Geladze has stepped down as head of Georgia’s State Security Service (SSSG), saying he will continue his work at another agency following consultations with the political team. Parliament approved Geladze for a six-year term in April 2026, but he remained in office for less than five months. Since the SsSG was separated from the Interior Ministry on August 1, 2015, the agency has had five heads under the Georgian Dream government.
The first SSSG chief was Vakhtang Gomelauri, who led the agency from August 1, 2015 to September 8, 2019, before becoming Interior Minister. He was succeeded by Grigol Liluashvili, who served from October 17, 2019 to April 2, 2025, making him the longest-serving head in the agency’s history. Liluashvili left the post before the end of his term and was initially expected to become regional development minister, but Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze later said they had differing views on the ministry’s operating principles and staffing policy.
Anri Okhanashvili replaced Liluashvili on April 4, 2025, after being approved by Parliament for a six-year term. However, he served for less than five months, leaving the post on August 23, 2025. He was succeeded by Mamuka Mdinaradze, a former executive secretary of Georgian Dream, who headed the SSG from September 3, 2025 to April 21, 2026, for around seven months.
Geka Geladze became the fifth head of the SSSG on April 21, 2026 and left the position on September 14, 2026. Like Okhanashvili, he served exactly five months. Although the SSSG chief is formally appointed by Parliament for a six-year term, leadership changes have accelerated significantly: Geladze’s departure means the agency has had three different heads in the past year and a half.
