In the village of Abedati, Martvili Municipality, just nine kilometers from the town center, the winery “Argvani” has been producing Megrelian wines since 2021. The brand combines traditional winemaking with modern techniques to create a unique taste and cultural experience.
Founder Khatia Jakhua shared with BMGTV’s program “Women’s Narrative” that the winery has grown steadily since its inception, with plans to expand both local production and exports.
“Our family has long-standing experience in viticulture, and while we have always harvested traditionally, combining this with modern methods has allowed us to take our winemaking to a new scale. This is the beginning of a new wine brand in Samegrelo,” said Jakhua.
Initially, the team faced several challenges, including labor shortages, infrastructure limitations, and technical hurdles. While Argvani began by producing the Imeretian grape variety, the winery’s main goal is to promote the highly acidic Mingrelian variety Ojaleshi.
Today, Argvani produces wine using both traditional and classical methods. Currently, only Ojaleshi is available, and it is already represented in branches of “8000 Mosavali”, including Berlin. Looking ahead, the company aims to enter the Spanish market.
Regarding upcoming plans, Jakhua noted: “This year we want to expand by planting Machkvatur, another Mingrelian grape variety. We have also added Sauvignon Blanc to our portfolio.”
Argvani currently maintains 2 hectares of vineyards, with wine bottles priced around 35–40 GEL, making it accessible for everyone to enjoy a taste of Samegrelo’s winemaking heritage.
