Iran’s Ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, announced a significant expansion in energy cooperation between the two countries, including doubling the volumes of Iranian gas exports to Armenia and Armenian electricity imports to Iran.

In the near future, the energy partnership between Armenia and Iran is set to reach a new level. According to Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Sobhani in an interview with SNN, the volume of gas supplies from Iran to Armenia is planned to be doubled. In return, Iran intends to double its import of electricity from Armenia.

A key factor for implementing these plans will be the completion of the third high-voltage power transmission line between the two countries. According to Sobhani, this project is in its final stage and will be commissioned in the coming months.

The diplomat noted the successful extension of the "Gas for Electricity" agreement until 2030, calling it a "great success." This agreement, supported by new infrastructure projects, is designed not only to meet the mutual needs of the two countries but also to improve the regional energy infrastructure as a whole.

Sobhani also emphasized the significance of the $212 million contract signed in 2023 between Iranian and Armenian companies for the construction of the Agarak-Kajaran road, part of the North-South corridor. This project is seen as an important step in developing Iran's technical and engineering service exports to Armenia.

The ambassador highlighted the overall increase in trade turnover between the countries from $200 million to $711 million, indicating active development of bilateral relations. Additionally, there is growing cooperation in tourism and investment, especially in the petrochemical and construction materials sectors.

Sobhani underlined the strategic importance of the geographical locations of both countries and noted that the 46-kilometer Armenian-Iranian border is one of the safest. He also recalled the long-standing positive historical ties between the peoples of the two countries.
