Iran's Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani stated that Armenia should be viewed not only as a market of three million people but also as a gateway to the 200-million-strong Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) market.
During a press conference on April 16th in Yerevan, Sobhani emphasized Armenia's unique geographical position as the only country in the EAEU with a common border with Iran.
The ambassador reported an increase in trade volumes between the two countries in January and February. He noted that last year's trade turnover amounted to $704 million ($692 million according to the Statistical Committee of Armenia) and expressed optimism about further growth in bilateral trade in 2024, citing ongoing discussions with Armenia's Ministry of Economy.
Sobhani stressed the need to create favorable conditions and overcome existing obstacles to achieve significant growth in trade and economic relations.
He announced an upcoming visit by the president of the Iran Trade Promotion Organization to Armenia and expressed hope for successful discussions and the conclusion of agreements on trade cooperation during the visit.
BMG reminds that at the end of 2023, Yerevan and Tehran agreed on the elimination of road tolls for trucks. These tolls are collected at the border crossings.
According to the Statistical Committee of Armenia, in 2023, Armenia's trade turnover with Iran amounted to $692.496.8 million, decreasing by 2.5% compared to 2022.
