Armenia and the World Bank discuss strengthening seismic safety and disaster risk management

On May 20, Armenia's Minister of Internal Affairs Vahe Ghazaryan met with a delegation led by Sameh Naguib Wahba, Regional Director of the World Bank. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs' press service.

According to the press service, Vahe Ghazaryan noted that the Government of the Republic of Armenia has approved the Disaster Risk Management Strategy for 2023-2030 and the Action Plan for 2023-2026, which outline the strategic priorities.

It was also reported that, in order to reform the legislative framework for disaster risk management, a draft law on "Disaster Risk Management and Population Protection" has been revised, and a sectoral strategic document on seismic protection is being developed.

Sameh Naguib Wahba presented the activities and work carried out by the World Bank in the field of disaster risk reduction and emergency response.

During the meeting, the conditions of special-purpose facilities in terms of seismic risk, compliance with building codes and regulations, and other issues related to seismic protection were also discussed.

Kamo Tsutsulyan, Director of the Rescue Service and Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, expressed gratitude for the support and emphasized the importance of disaster risk mapping, technical equipment, and service modernization.
