Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated during a press conference that the possibility of independently managing border security with Turkey could be discussed if the border is reopened and mutual trust is established.

The Foreign Minister noted that Russian border guards were initially deployed temporarily at Armenia’s borders with Turkey and Iran, as well as at Zvartnots Airport, until Armenia could develop the necessary infrastructure for independent border security.

In recent months, Yerevan has demonstrated its capability to independently manage border control. Since August 1, 2024, Armenian border guards have fully assumed control of checkpoints at Zvartnots Airport, and in October, an agreement was reached to transfer the management of border checkpoints with Iran to Armenian authorities.

However, Mirzoyan emphasized that the issue of withdrawing Russia’s 102nd military base, which operates in Armenia under an agreement until 2044, is not on the agenda.

The base, which includes an aviation unit stationed at the Erebuni airfield in Yerevan, continues to carry out air defense duties as part of the CIS Joint Air Defense System.
