Armenia Expands Cooperation with IAEA: New Five-Year Nuclear Energy Plan Signed

On September 20, during the 68th session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, a significant event took place in the field of international nuclear energy cooperation.

Armen Papikyan, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, and Hua Liu, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), signed a framework document on cooperation between Armenia and the IAEA for the period of 2024-2029.

The document, developed in close collaboration with relevant Armenian agencies, outlines key areas of technical cooperation with the IAEA. Among the priority areas are the use of nuclear energy, nuclear and radiation safety regulation, nuclear and radiation medicine, environmental radiation protection, and water resource management.

Following the signing ceremony, a meeting took place where both sides noted the positive development of cooperation between Armenia and the IAEA. The participants emphasized the crucial role and importance of the Agency within the framework of its mandate.

Earlier, during the conference, the Armenian delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Hakob Vardanyan, held a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. The agenda included discussions on extending the operational life of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, plans to increase its capacity, and further collaboration with the IAEA in this direction.

It was reported that the Armenian delegation actively participated in the General Conference, holding about twenty meetings with international partners and organizing working sessions with IAEA specialized departments.
