Iran's Ambassador to Yerevan Mehdi Sobhani announced Armenia's interest in opening a representation office in the Chabahar Port, which, according to him, would contribute to the development of trade with India, Iran, and South Asian countries.
"Currently, preparations are underway for the visit of the head of the organization responsible for the operation of Iranian ports to Armenia. Also, the visit of some Armenian officials to Chabahar is being worked out," the ambassador noted at a press conference in Yerevan on April 16.
Sobhani emphasized the strategic importance of Armenia for Iran as an outlet to the northern routes and the Black Sea, as well as the significance of Iran for Armenia as a gateway to the Persian and Oman Gulf countries.
"In the near future, we will reach agreements on freight transportation issues, including reducing transit tariffs and road fees," he added.
At the end of 2023, the Iranian side expressed readiness to provide Armenian companies with access and favorable conditions in its ports. On these matters, the parties are preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding, after which Iran will present proposals on the terms of port operation.
Afterward, practical discussions will begin regarding which ports can expect preferential regimes for Armenian goods, said Armenia's trade attaché in Iran, Vardan Kostanyan, at the time.
BMG reminds that at the end of 2023, Yerevan and Tehran agreed on the elimination of road tolls for trucks. These tolls are collected at the border crossings.
According to the Statistical Committee of Armenia, in 2023, Armenia's trade turnover with Iran amounted to $692.496.8 million, decreasing by 2.5% compared to 2022.
